holiday meals to the hung bring. good morning, alex. >> reporter: the thanksgiving operation in full swing, right now, here in glad. you can take a look and see all the volunteers, hundreds of them, 500 volunteers taking part in this effort. they do it every thanksgiving. over here, we have the hams are getting going, they will serve up 5000 meals to those in need later on today. just an amazing undertaking here. and all the folks come down and volunteer their time here on thanksgiving, and do their part to contribute. i want to disturb. you come down here many years, i understand? why? >> i do it for the people who need it, help them out, come down because it's a good, kind of a party for the volunteers, pretty much, there's a lot of people in need. and glad provides for the needs. that's why i come.

>> reporter: everyone is in a great mood. that's right. >> lot of fun. >> when you serve up the meals later on, how -- what's that feeling like? >> feels really good to be able to give back, be able to receive the smile on the other person's face when they are taking that ham or turkey or whatever, and if they want to come back, they come back for more. >> come back to smiles, too. >> right. >> reporter: one of hundreds volunteers in glide, taking part in the preparation for the thanksgiving meals. they are serving a breakfast that will start a short time from now, and the thanksgiving meal will start at 9:30 to 2:00 p.m. we'll be here throughout the morning. we're live in san francisco, ktvu. >> thanks, sounds good. and new, a lot of bay area charities are busy preparing thanksgiving meals for thousands of people who need it. we were inside the salvation army kitchen in san francisco a little while ago this morning.

look at the stuffing there! after the cooking is done, volunteers will deliver the meals to the door steps to people who can't leave their houses because they are ill or there is some other reason. one volunteer chef says this is a labor of love. >> what does it take to prepare 5000 meals for those in need? >> a lot of love, a lot of love and hard work. we literally have been cooking turkeys around the clock. >> they expect to feed 5000 people. the meal deliveries start in a little while at 8:00 this morning. richmond, the restaurant salulte will provide 6000 meals. the first sitting at 10:00, the second at noon. the bay area of rescue mission will hold din under at st. paul's episcopal church, and potts annual livermore community thanksgiving dinner will be serving meals between 1 and

5:00 p.m., everybody's invited. the thanksgiving, many food banks in the bay area and across the country say they're struggling to come up with enough food to meet an increased demand. one reason, the federal government has cut its contributions to food banks. coming up, the other proposed cut by the government, that could put even more pressure on food banks. be. and new this morning, the white house released a thanksgiving day message from president obama. >> we give thanks for blessings that are all too rare in this world. the ability to spend time with the ones we love, to say what we want, to worship as we please, to nope that there are brave men and women defending our premium done around the globe, and to tell the children, here in america, no dream is too big, if they are willing to work for it. >> yesterday, the president and his family continued their thanksgiving tradition of serving others by volunteering

at a washington, d.c., area food bank. time is 7:05. the festivities, they have begun in san jose's fame miss turkey trot -- famous turkey trot. we are in san jose in the middle of everything and i'm looking over your shoulder, this is one of the biggest thanksgiving day races in the country. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, and the costume contest is about to get underway. you can see there's some great costumes. there's indiana jones, we have super mario brothers, a robot. and even pacman, and it's going to be a lot of fun, judging is about to start, but in the next 45 minutes, the first race will begin. now, this is video of last year's turkey trot. it's the second largest race of its kind on thanksgiving day.

a majority are participating in the 5 and 10 k. organizers have extended the deadline until 8:00 a.m., and we started seeing a lot more people starting to show up, and getting warmed up to race. >> i feel it's cool, like it's intimidated, but the fact that there are so many people you don't know, it's encouraging you to -- >> are you excited about burning calories? >> yeah, yeah. more excited about eating afterwards. >> reporter: all the registration funds raised go to three local charities, organizers anticipate they could hit the $1 million mark, and because there's going to be so many people here downtown, people are going encouraged to used the light rail to actually get here. all highway 87 ramps will remain open, and back out live, just to give you have an idea of just how huge this event it, the arch you're looking at, i'm told by organizers, that they've expanded that and 14,000 people

will bass under that arch -- pass under that arch each minute. these people are motivated to dress up and try to win, because you can win airplane tickets, and tickets to the 49ers games that are coming up. so we will bring you more once this first race against underway at 7:45. that's the 10 k wheelchair rice. i-- race. it is 7:07. police reopen westbound 580 in oakland after a wild freeway shoot-out forced a complete shut down of the busy freeway on thanksgiving eve. investigators say passengers in two cars fired shots at each other near the seminary avenue exit around 80:00 last night. one car was riddled with bullets, but passengers were gone by the time the police arrived. traffic was diverted for almost two hours, but all lanes were

back open by 11:30 last night, and so far, no injuries have been reported. oakland police do not think the freeway chute-out is expected to a homicide that happened about a miami away. a man was found shot on hilton street at seminary around 9:30 last night. and police were told the victim had been in a car accident at another location. then drove to hilton street and that's where he was shot. we don't know yet his name, and there's no word on a motive. now to the continuing coverage of the middle east conflict. so far, a frag twill ceasefire deal between israel and gaza's hamas rulers appears to be hold ing. p palestinians in gaza celebrating the truce with israel as a victory. now the israelis and gaza's hamas rulers will try to open up the border of the palestinian

for christmas care package, andd responses has been overwhelming. >> of the while many worry about eating too much, 50 million americans are dealing with the opposite problem. real hunger. for people are using food stamp than ever before, and the situation could get even worse. as allison burns reports from washington, d.c., the budget battles in congress mean the demand for food assistance could go up dramatically. >> reporter: bonito that is up for her church's thanksgiving dinner, expecting a larger than usual crowd. >> what we've been seeing here recently is that the need has just gotten so much greater. >> reporter: but she is noticing fewer choices at the food bank this year, contributions from the federal government and donations are down. >> the majority of this food goes to children and it goes to

seniors, which is extremely important. >> reporter: the federal government has cut its contribution to food banks like this that serve hundreds of charities by more than a third. that means more empty shelves, and more hungry people. and as congress considers dramatic cuts to the food stamp program, demand is expected to increase at local food pantries. a package of legislation known as the farm bill would force half a million people to lose about $90 in food stamps a month, and make thousands of others ineligible. the program has just become too big. >> but half the people receiving food stamps are above the poverty rate, so we've expanded this to become a middle class entitlement. >> reporter: she says cutting food stamps should not be an option until the economy improves. >> to me, it would be a travesty. >> reporter: congress is expected to take up the proposed

burst through a manhole near balboa street. so we're just south of where the cliff house is. it flood the parking area, and promenade, and spilled into the ocean. so it looks like it was about 90% rain water, 10% sewage, so the public utility commission -- surfers have health and safety concerns. >> it do, it's conclusion, and you can get sick from it and -- as you see, there's nobody in the water. people are pretty wise about that here. >> reporter: the pumping station at ocean beach which processes about 150 gallons a day was operating at full capacity, but the rain simply overwhelmed the system, according to officials. so crew dust clean up the walkway with beach before reopening, but it could be a week before this part of ocean beach is reopened. we will keep you posted. we did speak to somebody and they said down the street, right near the zoo is where they had

right there, firefighters want you to watch this, they are warning how teach phrygia turkey can be very dangerous -- deep frying a turkey can be very dangerous, firefighters say don't put too much oil in the pot, that can spill, and spark a flash flyer. and if a fire does start, they say don't try to put it out with water. it only makes it worse. grease fires can be controlled with baked powder. take a look at these wild turkeys in danville, they are invading yards, damaging landscaping, and leaving droppings on top the cars. the birds make the roads dangerous as well, just last month, an i believe bicyclist died after hitting a flock of wild turkeys. don't try to feed those turkeys, juries grab a water host to shoe them away from the report.

fights broke out on what police are starting to call black outwednesday. that's because fights and drunk driving violations are more common on the night before thanksgiving. in the latest incident, one person was taken to the hospital, and police made one arrest for driving under the influence. the highway patrol says it's concerned that a growing up in of californians are failing to wear their seat belts. officers feel the problem will only worsen this holiday weekend. they believe people making short trips hike to a store or loved one's home are less likely to wear the belt, crashes killed 32 people in california last thanksgiving, and more than 2/3 were not wearing the seat belts. i have a car that beeps like crazy if you don't have it on. sal is back, for the most part. is behaving themselves this morning? >> it's been light out there on this thanksgiving. you would expect that.
